A BRIEF BACKGROUND ON FAR EAST BROADCASTING COMPANY (FEBC) PHILIPPINES
The vast ministry of FEBC Radio grew out of the heart of FEBC founders, two friends – Dr. Robert Bowman and Mr. Jim Broger – who responded to God’s call for missions in the Far East.
Back in the 1940s, when Dr. Bowman and Mr. Broger began to establish Far East Broadcasting Company (FEBC), they were looking to reach millions in China. The two men from the US pooled their resources together, hoping to set up a radio station in that vast country. However, the doors closed in on them, leading them to the Philippines.
On July 6, 1946, John Broger secured a franchise for FEBC. Within a few weeks, he found a suitable site in Karuhatan, Valenzuela City. Not long after, the Philippine Congress granted FEBC a franchise to operate radio broadcast facilities under a Filipino corporation registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission on August 26, 1946. In His own time and through countless miraculous ways, God provided for all the other needs of this radio ministry—land, antenna, transmitter and manpower.
So, for the first time on June 4, 1948, the song “All Hail the Pow’r of Jesus’ Name” echoed through the airwaves, signalling the start of Gospel broadcasting in the country. Since then, the ministry of FEBC has steadily made an impact in the lives of countless people all over the world, especially in areas where there is religious persecution, political strife and economic hardship. In the vast country of China, for instance, half of the 70-million Christians had first heard the Gospel through broadcasts from the “Voice of Friendship.”
At present, FEBC manages ten AM and FM stations strategically located in key cities all over the Philippines. It also reaches those living and/or working abroad through the live streaming of some of its stations. The shortwave broadcasts to China and the rest of Southeast continues through facilities in Bocaue, Bulacan and Iba, Zambales.
In an effort to be closer to listeners and keep up with the latest in communications technology, the FEBC headquarters (Christian Radio City Manila) were moved to the Ortigas business district, in the heart of Manila. For most of its existence, it was located in Karuhatan, Vaenzuela City.
FEBC Philippines is part of an international broadcast network that proclaims the Gospel in around 150 languages through approximately 5,000 hours each week utilizing on-air, online and on-the-ground channels. It relies solely upon God’s faithfulness and provisions. He continues to touch people’s hearts and move them to pray and give generously to this ministry. Being a non-profit, non-commercial radio network and without any pressures from advertisers, FEBC has managed to keep its message pure, and that is—We are all sinners and Christ who loved us gave His life to redeem us from the punishment of sin. We can have life in Christ if we believe and trust in Him.
